Last week David Welch and Janine Garbers visited Spain to look at the this years strawberry crop.
Spanish farmers have been able to plant more Strawberry crop this year due to the expectation of favourable water conditions.
Over the past 3 seasons, growers in the Huelva region especially have been hit with rather difficult restrictions on water. However, with the restrictions being eased this year. The intense rainfall in the Huelva/Donana region in Spain has left growers with a different problem. Mainly botrytis, which is mould growth on the Strawberry plants due to them being too damp to long periods of their growth cycle. Farmers are essentially expecting a very similar overall yield this year even with the added acreage assigned to the Strawberry crop.
